FITTING HANDLEBARS

The trend for mountain bike bars is towards more width. In the early 1990s a 580mm (23in) bar was considered wide, but that would be exceptionally narrow by today’s standards. XC race bikes may still be equipped with flat 580mm bars, but for all-round trail bikes even 680mm (26.75in) is on the narrow side – plenty of bikes come with 720mm (28.4in) or wider, and it’s possible to get bars over 760mm (30in) wide.

Such wide bars work well with modern bikes, which tend to have relaxed head angles and short stems. Such a setup isn’t for everyone, though, especially if you’re below average height or ride densely wooded trails. While it’s best to buy handlebars at the length you are going to use them, that’s not always practical – bars aren’t usually available in a large range of widths, with manufacturers assuming that you’ll cut them down to suit you. It’s possible to cut down aluminium and carbon bars.

1 Before installing handlebars, ensure that the inside of the stem clamp is free from any sharp edges or burrs that may lead to stress risers in the bar and possible failure. Sharp corners at the edge of the bar clamp can be easily rectified with a small half-round needle file.
